Cross-Listed and Slashed Courses

Cross-Listed Courses

Cross-listed courses are single courses offered jointly by two departments or schools, typically to support interdisciplinary topics. Although students can only register for one version, both courses are taught at the same time, in the same location, and by the same instructor(s).

Key Characteristics
  • Co-scheduled: same day, time, room and instructor(s)
  • Students may only register for one of the cross-listed courses
  • Courses must be identical in:
    • Course level (first number)
    • Title and credit hours
    • Grade rules and learning outcomes
    • Course descriptions and content
Additional Notes
  • Cross-listing in more than two departments is discouraged unless academically justified
  • Each department must submit supporting documentation in the course inventory
  • Any revisions must be submitted (or confirmed) for all versions of the cross-listed course
  • Treated as equivalent courses for:
    • GPA calculation
    • Total earned credit hours
    • Federal financial aid eligibility

Slashed Courses

Slashed courses allow students at different academic levels (e.g., undergraduate, master鈥檚, doctoral) to take a course together. These are always within the same discipline and are scheduled to be taught simultaneously by the same instructor.

Permitted Combinations
  • 4/5: Senior undergraduate and master鈥檚
  • 4/5/7: Senior undergraduate, master鈥檚 and doctoral
  • 6/8: Master鈥檚 and doctoral
Key Requirements
  • Same subject code (e.g., BSCI)
  • Identical course content except for:
    • Course level and prerequisites
    • Expectations and assignments appropriate to each academic level
  • Students may only register for one version of the course
  • Students who have taken the undergraduate course may NOT repeat the course at the graduate level for credit towards a graduate degree.
  • Undergraduate students must receive permission to register for the graduate-level course. For more information, visit the policy in the catalog.
Administrative Guidelines
  • Each course is treated as stand-alone for registration, enrollment and funding purposes
  • Supporting documentation must be submitted for each version
  • Any course revision must be submitted for all corresponding slashed courses
  • Treated as equivalent courses for:
    • GPA and credit hour calculation
    • Federal financial aid eligibility
