What are testing accommodations?

Testing accommodations are designed to provide equal access to the opportunity to demonstrate course knowledge. Testing accommodations may be required for students whose disability impairs their ability to take exams or quizzes using the standard conditions of the classroom. Testing accommodations apply to traditionally-timed assessments, including exams, quizzes, and finals.

Students with exam accommodations can use the SAS testing center, an alternative location arranged with the instructor, or have the accommodations implemented within the Canvas course. Instructors may be asked to proctor exams for classes that fall outside of the SAS testing hours unless students are permitted to take the exam at a different day and time.

How do students use testing accommodations?

  • Students should communicate with their instructor about if or how they plan to use their testing accommodations.
  • When testing in SAS:
    • Students are responsible for scheduling their exams in SAS at least three business days in advance. Exam requests must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. to be counted for that day.
    • Students are expected to take their exams at the same day and time as the class unless written permission from the instructor is provided.
    • Testing hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. All exams will be collected promptly at 4:45 p.m. Students should schedule their exam appointments with enough time to fully utilize their accommodations within these hours.
    • Students should bring their own materials, including pens/pencils, calculators, or computers. Students may be responsible for using their own laptop if personal laptops are being used for testing in the classroom.
    • All personal items, including phones, smart watches, and headphones, must be turned off and placed in a locker. Exams may be stopped if SAS suspects that students are utilizing prohibited items.
    • Students who are more than fifteen minutes late to an exam appointment may not begin the exam until they receive instructor permission.

What if I miss the deadline to schedule my exam?

Students are expected to schedule their exams in Access KSU at least three business days in advance. Requests must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. to count for that day. If an exam is not scheduled by the deadline, the following options may be available:

  • Students may ask their instructor if they are able to provide the accommodations directly or allow the exam to be rescheduled so it can be requested within the required timeframe.
  • If accommodations cannot be arranged, students may need to take the exam with the class without accommodations.
  • If an extenuating circumstance prevented timely scheduling, students may complete the . Submitting the form does not guarantee that the exam can be scheduled. Same-day requests may not be possible.
