The Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiologic Technology educates students on how to perform diagnostic imaging procedures. Medical imaging is a branch of health care delivery that utilizes x-rays and other energy forms to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. Through a blend of classroom education at the university and clinical education at a hospital or outpatient centers, students learn anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, radiation safety, basic patient care and imaging equipment operation.

Graduates are eligible to take the certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) to become registered radiologic technologists.

Admission Requirements

The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opportunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three or more years ago.

�� campuses at Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Geauga, Salem, Stark, Trumbull and Tuscarawas, and the Twinsburg Academic Center, have open enrollment admission for students who hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.

Some programs may require that students meet certain requirements before progressing through the program. For programs with progression requirements, the information is shown on the Coursework tab.

International Students: All international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions to waive) by earning a minimum 71 TOEFL iBT score, minimum 6.0 IELTS score, minimum 47 PTE score or minimum 100 DET score, or by completing the ELS level 112 Intensive English Program. ¹: Students who have completed BSCI 21010 and BSCI 21020 (or ATTR 25057 and ATTR 25058, or EXSC 25057 and EXSC 25058) may use these courses in place of BSCI 11010 and BSCI 11020, but the courses must have been completed within the past five years prior to admission to the program.

Progression Requirements

To be able to register for Radiologic Technology (RADT) courses, students must be admitted to technical study. Admission is selective due to the limited number of students approved for each clinical education setting. Admission criteria are the following:

Minimum 2.750 high school GPA (minimum 2.750 overall GPA for applicants previously or currently attending a college)
Completion of high school or college-level algebra course (or MATH 00022) with minimum C grade
Completion of high school or college-level biology course with minimum C grade
Completion of high school or college-level chemistry course with minimum C grade
Minimum four hours of job shadowing (eight hours preferred)
Submission of a Radiologic Technology application

Tuition & Fees

Technical Standards are established to acknowledge the essential functional requirements necessary for enrolled students to acquire the knowledge, skills, competencies and values of an entry level radiologic technologist. The technical standards of admission are not a complete listing of behaviors required but are a sampling of the types of abilities needed to meet program objectives and requirements.

The following essential functions must be met by all students after acceptance into the major in order to complete the program. In the event that a student is unable, or becomes unable to fulfill these technical standards with or without reasonable accommodations, the student cannot enroll or remain enrolled in the program. For students who believe they can meet these standards with accommodation, the �� Salem Student Disabilities Coordinator will validate their need for accommodation and will work with the program to determine if reasonable accommodation can be made. This accommodation will take into account whether accommodation would jeopardize technologist/patient safety or undercut an essential element of a course or clinical experience.

Radiologic Technology students must demonstrate:

Sufficient communication skills to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, health care professionals and the public, including individuals from different cultural and social backgrounds and in stressful and emergency situations. Students must be able to understand and speak the English language at a level consistent with competent professional practice. Must be able to document patient information legibly & accurately
Sufficient sight to read requisitions & charts, observe conditions of the patient in low levels of light; to evaluate medical images on view boxes and on computer screens and to record information clearly and accurately.
Sufficient hearing to interact with and respond to patients as well as to the audible sounds of equipment.
Ability to stand and walk while assigned to a clinical education setting so as to perform medical imaging procedures in an appropriate and effective manner.
Ability to lift, assist and maneuver patients in wheelchairs, carts and imaging tables without injury to patient, self or other healthcare workers and to respond to medical emergencies in an effective manner. Have sufficient motor skills to manipulate and reach equipment and to operate small controls. Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds to shoulder height. Perform CPR, first aid & general patient care.
Ability to assimilate, analyze, synthesize, integrate concepts and timely solve problems found in medical imaging and be able to distinguish deviations from the norm.
Have the intellectual and emotional skills to exercise discretion in handling confidential medical information.
Have the cognitive ability to properly perceive and deal with environmental threats and stresses and continue to function safely and effectively during high stress periods.
Able to protect oneself and others from hazards in the health care environment, such as infectious disease, contaminated equipment, sharp instruments, chemical fumes, magnetic fields and radiation.
